Alfred and Martha Gomes Scholarship Foundation 501(c)(3)
This day is more than just a golf tournament and celebration – it is a family reunion. Once again, with your contributions, we will be able to support the students of Easton as we will award The Alfred F. and Martha Gomes Family Scholarships to students at both Oliver Ames and Stonehill College pursuing higher education. We are truly grateful for your support and participation on this memorable day each year.

The Seaweed Shootout became an annual scholarship tournament in May 2002 to honor the legacy of Alfred Gomes and benefit Stonehill College. Upon Alfred’s passing in March 2001, Stonehill developed the Alfred and Martha Gomes Scholarship fund.
In 2004, the tournament expanded the scholarship to include graduating seniors from Oliver Ames High School. Over the last twenty-three years, the tournament has donated over $100,000 to Stonehill College and Oliver Ames Graduates and has evolved into a non-profit organization.
In 2023, the Alfred and Martha Gomes Scholarship Foundation received official non-profit and charitable organization status.
Alfred grew up in South Easton, Massachusetts. As a kid, he often spent time at Stonehill, helping in the garden. In his adult life, after a few bartending gigs at the 400, he was hired to do a job for the priests which turned into a Bartending Service. Alfred and family bartended many events over the years at Stonehill College - a true staple at all of the major college events.
Upon his passing, Stonehill dedicated a dining hall, the Alfred and Martha Gomes Dining Room and endowed a scholarship in his name. (Father Mac, a close family friend, championed for a residence hall named after Alfred but settled for the dining room).
Alfred Gomes
“Seaweed”
As a way to give back to Stonehill each year, the Gomes Family began the Seaweed Shootout in 2002, choosing the first Saturday in May which coincides with the Kentucky Derby - one of Alfred’s favorite events.
Alfred is remembered as many things but to name a few…husband, father, grandfather, uncle, brother, postman, bartender, trash pick up, mover, committee man, snowplower, wood deliverer, financier, laborer, supporter, real estate investor, and confidante.
